drawing practice
One good way to learn how to draw is by copying the masters. I used to do this a lot when I was younger, so I when found some old "Josie" comics for a quarter apiece last weekend at the Pittsburgh Comicon, I decided to try my hand at reproducing some images from them. It was a fun exercise, but I've still got a long way to go before I'm nearly as good as Dan DeCarlo. At any rate, I thought I'd share my results here:

Thanks. They're okay; they don't have nearly the charm or the confidence of the originals, but I'm learning. Hopefully I'll be able to apply some of these lessons to my own stuff soon!

I'm a huge Archie fan.

Before I read the text of your post I checked out the images and thought, "Hey, right there. Those look Archie-ish" (Archie-ish is the technical term).

You put across the feeling of Archie. Nicely done.

The bottom middle one is DAMN close. There's a lot to learn by the way DeCarlo did eyes and the mouse. Such great acting.

Nice job. I've got a De Carlo original that I dearly love. (I still need to find me an affordable Bob Montana strip, though.)

My favorite is the top-right one, because it seems like such a cool merging of his and your styles. The face , though obviously based on his stuff, definitely has the feel of something you've done.

Now, the bottom one, I wouldn't have been able to tell that that was you, at all.

I can still see your line in amongst the DeCarlo elements. Very cool.

I like these a lot. You seem to have used a thicker line than what would usually be expected from the old stuff, but I think that bridges the gap a bit between the old style and something more contemporary.

i often copy a whole page of art, just to try and see how the artist might have drawn something, or to understand them a little better.
