Yesterday I drew some fan-art for the World's Greatest Minicomic, Neil Fitzpatrick's "Neil Jam."

Neil Jam is my favorite regular minicomic series, hands down. I never know how to describe this to people, but I guess I'd say it reads like a 1980s Saturday-morning cartoon adaptation of an arcade game you never heard of.

I've been following Neil Jam for several years now, and if I were in charge of Top Shelf Comics or AdHouse Books I would collect all sixteen(!) issues into one giant book of wonder, pronto. Anyway, I highly recommend checking it out. Here's my pinup, which will only make sense to Neil Jam readers--it's Willis kicking a Tot:

drawing practice

One good way to learn how to draw is by copying the masters. I used to do this a lot when I was younger, so I when found some old "Josie" comics for a quarter apiece last weekend at the Pittsburgh Comicon, I decided to try my hand at reproducing some images from them. It was a fun exercise, but I've still got a long way to go before I'm nearly as good as Dan DeCarlo. At any rate, I thought I'd share my results here:

Wow, so I haven't posted anything here in a long time. I've been busy with a lot of stuff, most recently the Pittsburgh Comicon, which was pretty great for me this year.

As usual, Ed Piskor and I split a table at the show, and while there we spent a little time chatting with the guys from the Comic Geek Speak podcast. You can listen to us blab about Dr. Dre, Dr. Octopus and more right here.

Also, the guys at Indie Spinner Rack just put up their special SPACE 2008 Wrap-Up Show, which also features interviews with me and Ed (separately, this time) from last month's convention in Columbus.

Finally, this Saturday is Free Comic Book Day! If you can't get to a comic shop, fear not! The good folks at Wide Awake Press will have "Piltdown," a brand-new collection of prehistoric funnies available for you to download AT ABSOLUTELY NO COST. Wow! I did a two-page story that is basically a cross between "Archie" and "The Flintstones." More details to come, but here's a teaser for the book:

As usual, S.P.A.C.E. was highly profitable: I sold every copy of THE CLAWS COME OUT that I brought with me.

The drive to Columbus was pretty dicey, as we left just as the snow and freezing rain was starting to make a mess of the roads, but by the time we got near Columbus, things started looking better. The Friday night party at the Monkey's Retreat was a blast--I could have spent hours just going through their longboxes filled with weird and obscure comics--and the show itself was even better.

Chuck from the website Comic Related was there all weekend, taking a million pictures and posting them on his site in real time, which was neat. Here's me, behind my table:

Also, when I got home, I was pleasantly surprised to see that Jay Stephens gave a nice plug for my book on his always awesome "Monsterama" blog. I'm totally fired up to draw some more comics. So yeah, good weekend all around.

I'll be in Columbus Ohio this Saturday and Sunday for the Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo (a.k.a. S.P.A.C.E.), selling THE CLAWS COME OUT along with a whole mess of minicomics and other goodies. Some other Pittsburgh cartoonists are making the trek as well, namely Tom Scioli and Jim Rugg (Saturday only). And I'm driving up with Ed Piskor, of "American Splendor" fame.

Ed's got a new book out that he's self-publishing and distributing all on his own, called "Wizzywig Vol. 1: Phreak" and I can't recommend it enough. It's a fictional story about a lonely and obsessive kid growing up in the 70's who becomes an infamous telephone hacker, but it's based on a lot of real people and events. It's fascinating stuff, the art is great, and I can't wait for the next volume. Check it out at the show, or at Ed's website: http://www.edpiskor.com/.

A while back, cartoonist Matt Dembicki asked me to contribute to his comics anthology of trickster tales as told by 20 or so Native American storytellers. I was intrigued, and so I got the job of adapting Tim Tingle's story "Rabbit's Choctaw Tail Tale."

The book is due out this fall, but for now you can view some preliminary sketches and other artwork on the official "Trickster" blog. Here are the first two pages of my contribution:

Monday was the third session of Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School here in Pittsburgh. Since it's held at the Gypsy Cafe on the South Side, it only made sense that this month would feature local belly dancers. Special thanks to Miss Lauren Toohey, Khafif, and Zafira Dance Company for providing the modeling talent.
